The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky discusses theories and concepts applicable to nearly every variation of the game, including five-card draw (high), seven-card stud, hold ’em, lowball draw, and razz (seven-card lowball stud).
This book introduces you to the Fundamental Theorem of Poker, its implications, and how it should affect your play. Other chapters discuss the value of deception, bluffing, raising, the slow-play, the value of position, psychology, heads-up play, game theory, implied odds, the free card, and semibluffing.
Many of today’s top poker players will tell you that this is the book that really made a difference in their play. That is, these are the ideas that separate the experts from the typical players.
Those who read and study this book will literally leave behind those who don’t, and most serious players wear the covers off their copies. This is one of the best books ever written on poker. |

In much the same way that Beat the Dealer is associated with the game of blackjack, Super System is a poker classic that has more historical benefit these days than value as a poker text book.
Many of the games it mentions aren't played or play very differently in card rooms today. Nonetheless, there are still many real gems of advice in its pages, especially regarding No-Limit Holdem, and the book is well worth reading.
These days the book is more revered than it probably ought to be, but it will continue to belong on the shelf of every serious poker library for some time to come.
The book features chapters written by true experts in a given poker game:
Mike Caro - Draw Poker Chip Reese - 7 Card Stud Joey Hawthorne - Lowball (and variations) David Sklansky - 7 Card Stud High-Low Bobby Baldwin - Limit Hold'em Doyle Brunson - No-Limit Hold'em |
